Accutech Engineering Inc. was retained by the Government of Nunavut to complete Prime Consultant design and construction administration services for the design of a New High School in Naujaat, Nunavut. Accutech provided overall project management, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and structural engineering services. Accutech retained Parkin Architects Ltd and AGE Engineering for architectural and electrical engineering services respectively.
The Tuugaalik High School was Accutech’s first implementation of an innovative High School design that has been implemented in several additional communities. The design focused on providing a facility that is state-of-the-art Educational facility as well as a central hub for the community of Naujaat. In order to achieve this goal, Accutech focused on nurturing the relationship that the building users have with the surrounding tundra, rivers, and oceans. In concert with our partners and the Client, the Accutech team developed this design in order to foster a position relationship between the students and the Educational System. The overall goal of the project was to create a building where students would be excited to attend school and would assist in reducing the truancy rate for High School Students.
The Tuugaalik High School features large flexible classrooms, a Science Room, CTS Garage, CTS Woodshop, CTS Home Studies, a gymnasium, and a large Atrium space that can be converted to use for community events.
The delivery of the Tuugaalik High School was successfully completed, and users have reported an increase the in the attendance for High School students since the facility open its doors.
This Tuugaalik High School has been featured in several publications and has received a variety of awards for this innovative approach to Education in remote communities.
