Accutech Engineering Inc. partnered with Kudlik Construction Limited and Parkin Architects to form a Design Build Team (DBT) to replace the K-12 School in Kugaaruk, Nunavut that was destroyed by arson in early 2017. After the fire, the only remaining portion of the school was the stone entrance way. The new Arviligruaq Ilinniarvik School is a two-storey 4,623m2 facility designed to accommodate students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The interior and exterior architectural design is inspired by the surrounding environment and is themed “Winter Play”. The school features an impressive and welcoming atrium space that incorporates modern architectural themes as well as a stone-work homage to the original Kugaaruk School. The stone entranceway from the original school was disassembled and the materials were incorporated into public displays in the Atrium of the new school The Arviligruaq Ilinniarvik School features state of the art CTS facilities for Traditional and Trade related activities. This includes Home Studies, a Garage, Wood-Working Shop, and a skinning room large enough for a Narwhal. In addition, the new school features modern classrooms, a Science Room, and a Daycare. In order to get children back in school as quickly as possible, the Arviligruaq Ilinniarvik School project required design and construction to take place concurrently in order to accelerate the delivery of the project. The DBT is driving the project towards completion in time for the 2019-2020 School Year with the goal of ensuring that the Community receives its new school as quickly as possible.
